Pregnancy, although a beautiful thing, also puts your body under a lot of strain. Many women experience back pain while they are pregnant. Here are a few easy and free ways to relieve any back pain while you are pregnant.
Posture Is Key
As your body grows a new life, it has never been more important to have good posture. As your belly grows, your center of gravity is going to start shifting forward. It is common to try to negate the feeling of falling over in front by leaning back more when you sit and stand; however, this is not the correct response. Leaning back will actually increase the strain on your lower back and lead to more issues, not less.
What you need to do as you feel your body shifting forward is maintain good posture when you are standing up. You should try to keep your back as straight as possible, and keep your chest high and shoulders back. Don't slump your chest or your back to relieve pressure; this will only further strain your muscles. Be careful to avoid locking your knees; if you lock your knees in an attempt to maintain good posture, your knees could end up buckling, which is not a good outcome.
When you sit down, make sure that you have enough back support. With the extra weight up front, that may mean putting a small pillow or cushion behind your lower back.
Pay Attention To How You Sleep
Next, a lot of pregnancy back pain can originate from not sleeping properly. With all that extra weight up front, you need to through away all those years of advice where you have been told to sleep on your back. When you are with child, you should sleep on your side. Sleeping on your side allows your back to relax and keeps the pressure off of your body from your belly.
You may need to use additional pillows in order to sleep comfortably while pregnant. You may need to put a pillow between your knees in order to keep your spine straight and relaxed. You may also need to put pillows around your belly in order to support it and take some pressure off. Some pregnant women even need to put a pillow behind their backs when they sleep to help them stay on their side as they sleep. This is a good solution especially if you are not naturally a side sleeper.
Keeping Moving
Finally, don't become sedentary during your pregnancy. Exercise is extremely important when you are pregnant. Keeping active will help you keep your muscles strong so that they can support the changes in your body.
If you are already physically active, you should be able to keep you your regular exercise routine. If you are not that physically active to begin with, you should try gentle and easy exercises such as water workouts or walking. Always consult with your doctor about your exercise regime.
